It was a hospital discharge sticker.
The name printed on it was Mia.
The next morning, I called the resort.
A coworker named Jenna answered.
When I asked about Mia, there was a long silence.
Then Jenna said something that changed everything.
“You really don’t know why Sophie came up here, do you?”
My stomach tightened.
Apparently, Sophie had already known about Mia before taking the summer job. She had been asking about her during her first week at the resort.
When Sophie came downstairs, I confronted her.
“You knew Mia before you went there.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because of Dad.”
My husband Daniel had died five years earlier.
