My Best Friend Spent Years Caring for My Sister with Down Syndrome – Then He Said a Few Words That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

“Rosie is strong.”

Ben pressed his palms over his eyes.

A sound escaped him somewhere between a prayer and a sob.

Then a doctor came through the double doors.

Ben jumped to his feet.

The doctor’s expression warned us before he spoke.

“The babies have been delivered. They are premature, but they are stable and receiving support.”

“And Rosie?” Ben asked.

“She has lost a significant amount of blood. We are trying to control the bleeding, but she is unstable.”

The room seemed to move beneath me.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means we are doing everything possible, but you should prepare yourselves.”

Then he disappeared behind the doors.

Ben remained standing.

He swayed slightly.

I placed a hand against his back.

My best friend.

My brother-in-law.

The man my sister loved.

“Look at me,” I said. “Rosie chose you because you make her feel safe. She needs you to believe she can come back.”
