“I’m sorry.”
I placed the copied adoption record on the table.
“Susan, I need to ask you about the night my son was born. Was there another baby born that night connected to me?”
She read the document. Her face lost its color.
“Where did you get this?”
“Why does everyone keep asking me that? Please, was there another baby?”
Susan sat down.
“I need to be careful. I can tell you what I personally remember, but you’ll need the official records to confirm the details.”
“Fine. Tell me what you remember.”
“You were extremely weak after delivery. You’d lost a lot of blood, and you kept asking for your glasses.”
My throat tightened.
“They broke during labor.”
“I remember. You couldn’t see anyone clearly without them.”
She paused before continuing.
“You were frightened. Mark was even more frightened.”
“Why?”
Susan looked directly at me.
“Because both babies were alive.”
