“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell him?”
Diane lowered her eyes.
“I was scared. I didn’t know what would happen if I started asking questions I couldn’t take back.”
I examined the document more carefully. There was a date I recognized immediately: the day Luke was born. The maternity ward was listed, too, along with a line I couldn’t understand.
“Is there more?” I asked.
Diane opened a folder but hesitated before handing it over.
“I think you need to get the rest from the hospital. I don’t know what happened there.”
I looked at Luke, then Ben. Neither spoke.
“Do you remember anything about that day?” Ben finally asked.
A hospital room flashed through my mind. Mark holding my hand. My own tears.
“I’m going to the hospital,” I said.
Luke grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming.”
Ben followed. “So am I.”
“Please, give me an hour. I need facts before I tell any of us what this means.”
