“I didn’t move in because I wanted to leave home.”
“Then why?”
“Ben told me something. I didn’t believe him at first, but I had to see for myself. Now I know it’s true.”
“What did he tell you?”
Luke pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
“I need you to promise you won’t lie to me.”
I took the paper, expecting something insignificant. Instead, my legs nearly gave way.
“Where did you get this?”
“Ben’s house. He knows I took it.”
I put on my glasses and unfolded the document. As I read the details, my hands began to shake.
“Does Ben know what this says?” I asked.
His face crumpled.
“That’s why I came home.”
I grabbed my purse. “Where is Ben?”
“At his parents’ house.”
“Get in the car.”
“Mom…”
“Now, Luke.”
Twenty minutes later, Ben opened the door. His face was pale.
