Three Homes, Three Very Different Chapters

Taken together, Bacon and Sedgwick’s homes tell a surprisingly neat story. The Connecticut farm began as one man’s attempt to disappear into a “rundown little farmhouse” after a turbulent period in his life. It became a family home, an animal sanctuary of sorts and, unexpectedly, a social-media favorite.

New York represents almost the opposite impulse: Sedgwick wanted connection, restaurants, friends and city life again, and Bacon eventually came to believe that the apartment she fought for was one of the best decisions they ever made. Los Angeles was another reversal.

Bacon once defined himself partly by disliking the city; then he bought a home there and admitted he’d had a “strange conversion.” The common thread may be that none of the homes stayed exactly what either of them first imagined.
