I went to surprise my husband at the hospital—but one of his colleagues….

Room 814 was empty. The hospital bed was stripped bare, and the window was locked from the inside. Then, the heavy door clicked open, and Ben stood in the doorway.

He looked older by decades, his face pale, his eyes bloodshot and sunken. Seeing me standing there was a mix of overwhelming relief and terror.

“You came,” he breathed out.

“Of course I came, you fool,” I said, stepping toward him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid that if I told you the truth, you would become a target, too.”
The Dark Reality of the Hospital

Ben pulled out his phone, displaying dozens of open browser tabs, pharmaceutical manifests, internal hospital memos, and bank transfer records.

“Someone within upper management has been deliberately causing artificial drug shortages in the pediatric ward,” Ben explained quietly. “To create desperation. To make helpless families pay out-of-pocket fortunes on the black market for specialty drugs that are intercepted and diverted. Little Emily’s ongoing treatment regimen relied on one of those exact restricted medications.”

“And you stumbled onto it?”

“I found out by accident tracking inventory discrepancies. By the time I realized the scope of the corruption, it was too late to go through official channels. The corruption reached too high into the board.”

Before we could discuss it further, the overhead lights flickered and died. Heavy footsteps approached our door, and a piece of paper was slid under the crack: You should have told her.

When the emergency lighting kicked on, Arnold appeared in the doorway—holding little Emily’s hand. And standing right beside them was a senior executive administrator of the hospital board: Mrs. Carter.
The Ultimate Betrayal

Mrs. Carter smiled coldly. “Children are surprisingly easy to locate when they wander off.”

Ben stepped forward, his voice thick with fury. “Why? Why go to these lengths?”

“Because you wouldn’t stop digging,” she replied smoothly. “Do you have any idea how much money your little charitable crusade was costing the quarterly projections?”

I stared at her in utter disbelief. “You were the one stealing the medications and letting children suffer?”

Mrs. Carter’s sharp eyes locked onto me. “You really should have asked your husband why he was so desperate to keep you away from this hospital for the past year.”

I turned toward Ben. “Is she lying?”
