I felt my face burn.
My hands tightened around the wheelchair handles.
I was ready to tell her exactly what I thought.
But Grandpa moved first.
He rolled his chair toward the DJ booth.
The DJ looked confused.
Grandpa reached for the microphone.
The music stopped.
The entire gym went silent.
Grandpa looked directly at Amber.
“Let’s see who embarrasses whom.”
Nobody moved.
Then he smiled.
“Amber, come dance with me.”
The room erupted in shocked whispers.
Amber’s face went red.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
She looked around.
Everyone was watching her.
“I don’t dance with—”
“Afraid?” Grandpa asked.
That did it.
Amber stepped forward.
The DJ started a slow song.
Grandpa positioned his wheelchair at the center of the dance floor.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then he moved.
He turned his chair smoothly, using one hand to guide himself across the floor.
He spun.
He reversed direction.
He moved with confidence and rhythm.
The room went completely quiet.
Amber’s expression changed.
