I Finally Bought My Dream Home—Then Discovered a Family Secret That Changed Everything

“Yes.”

She looked at my father.

Then she looked back at me.

“Why would you do that now?”

I was confused.

“Because I’ve been saving for years.”

My mother didn’t seem pleased.

She reminded me that Beth’s wedding was approaching and suggested that my savings should have been available to help with the family expenses.

I was stunned.

“I paid for this house with my own money,” I explained.

She insisted that I should have considered the family’s priorities before making such a large purchase.

But I had never agreed to finance my sister’s wedding.

Beth was an adult.

Her wedding was important, but it wasn’t my financial responsibility.

I told my mother that I loved my sister and wished her well, but I intended to keep control of the money I had earned.

That was when the conversation became much more serious.
A Family Argument Turns Ugly

My mother became increasingly angry.

She accused me of being selfish.

She said I had changed since moving away.

She questioned why I needed my own home when I wasn’t married.

I tried to keep the conversation calm.

My marital status had nothing to do with whether I was financially prepared to own a home.
