I came home from New York three days early and found my husband in bed, cradling a baby who had the exact same birthmark I was born with. He looked at me as if nothing was wrong and whispered

Leo.

At first, I worried the baby would remind me only of betrayal.

Instead, the opposite happened.

I began waiting for his little sounds in the morning.

I learned which lullaby helped him sleep.

I discovered he hated socks.

He laughed whenever someone sneezed.

And when he wrapped his tiny fingers around mine, he held on as if he never wanted me to disappear.

By the sixth week, I couldn’t imagine our home without him.

“He is not.”

“Then we need an explanation.”

I looked around at the nine people seated at that table.

Her entire life had been hidden behind other people’s silence.

I refused to let Leo grow up as another secret people whispered about.

“He is my nephew,” I said clearly. “I recently discovered that I was adopted. His mother was my biological sister. She passed away, and Alex and I are pursuing permanent legal custody.”

The chairman shifted uncomfortably.

“Perhaps it would be better if you took some temporary leave until the attention dies down.”

I met his eyes.

“My family has changed. My ability to do my job has not.”

I stood.

“We will release one statement protecting the child’s privacy. Then I’m going back to work.”

And I walked out.

That evening, when I returned home, a courier had delivered a wooden box from the attorney handling Sara’s estate.

Inside were photographs.

Old journals belonging to Elena.

And one yellowed envelope written in Carmen’s handwriting.

On the front were the words:
