“What did you just say?”
Melissa froze.
“Ryan, what are you talking about? Give me my baby.”
He looked at her.
Then at me.
And said even more firmly:
“I’m sorry, but I have to give up the baby. I’M NOT TAKING HER WITH ME.”
Then
he placed his newborn daughter back into my arms.
My body was still shaking from labor, but suddenly I couldn’t feel anything.
“Ryan,” I whispered, “she’s your daughter. What is going on?”
Melissa stood up, tears streaming down her face.
“WHY? Ryan, tell me why we can’t take our daughter home!”
Ryan refused to meet her eyes.
His face turned red.
Finally, he exhaled and said:
“Look at HER BACK. We can’t do this.”
My heart dropped.
