“Eat after us, be in your room by eight, and no visitors,” my daughter-in-law said after moving into my house. My son only whispered, “Mom, please keep the peace.” So the next evening, I invited my three best friends over for dinner.

We laughed too loudly.

Sometimes we stayed up past midnight.

One evening, Janice looked at the clock.

“Margaret, it’s 8:07.”

I gasped dramatically.

“Oh no.”

Linda grinned.

“Should we leave?”

I raised my glass.

“Absolutely not.”

The room filled with laughter.

I looked at the women who had stood beside me when family tried to make me smaller.

Then I looked at my front door.

My kitchen.

My table.

My life.

For a while, Melissa believed age had made me weak.

What she learned was much simpler.

Kindness had never meant surrender.

And in my own house, I was done asking permission to live.
