Check Your Change — A Lincoln Penny Worth $336,000 Might Be Sitting There

A small number of bronze blanks were accidentally left behind and fed into the coin presses. Instead of the familiar gray steel cents, these rare blanks produced a handful of 1943 Lincoln cents made from bronze—an incredibly scarce error that would eventually become one of the most famous coins in American history.

When examples began surfacing in circulation in the late 1940s, the discovery created a sensation. Newspapers reported the mysterious pennies, collectors began searching feverishly, and rumors spread that a simple coin from your pocket could make you rich.

And the coin has a distinctive appearance.

On the front is the familiar portrait of Abraham Lincoln, but unlike the dull gray color of a standard 1943 steel cent, the rare bronze version carries a warm reddish-brown tone. Flip it over and you’ll see the classic inscription:

“ONE CENT — UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

Nothing about the design screams “fortune.”

That’s what makes it so fascinating.
