The shooting occurred in an outdoor university courtyard where approximately 3,000 people had gathered. Authorities said the shooter was believed to have fired from the roof of a nearby building, turning the surrounding campus into a critical part of the investigation.
Investigators examined multiple locations connected to the shooting and collected physical evidence while reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.
The FBI later released video showing the suspected shooter moving onto a rooftop before the attack and fleeing afterward. Authorities also recovered a rifle and ammunition in a wooded area near the university.
For investigators, every piece of evidence potentially mattered: surveillance footage, physical traces, witness accounts, and recordings made by people attending the event.
For everyone else, the meaning of the campus had changed almost instantly.
The Search for the Suspect
In the hours after the shooting, authorities appealed to the public for help identifying the person responsible. The FBI offered a reward of up to $100,000 and released photographs and video connected to the investigation.
The investigation eventually led to the arrest of Tyler Robinson, who faces aggravated-murder charges.
The case has since moved into the court system, where prosecutors and defense attorneys have disputed important questions surrounding the evidence, motive, and potential punishment. Robinson has not been convicted, and the allegations against him remain matters for the legal process to resolve.
More recently, investigators have described surveillance footage that prosecutors say shows Robinson moving around the university before the shooting and allegedly reaching the rooftop from which the fatal shot was fired. Those claims are being examined as part of the ongoing court proceedings.
The Questions That Remain
An arrest can answer one of the most immediate questions after a violent crime: Who is accused of carrying it out?
It does not necessarily answer everything.
