“If a verification code was sent,” I whispered, “she would have received it.”
David nodded.
“Correct.”
“And if the bank called the number on the application…”
“Your mother would have answered.”
I looked toward the glass wall.
My parents were standing in the lobby.
My mother was talking to my father.
Chloe was looking at her phone.
Suddenly, everything became painfully clear.
They hadn’t simply used my name.
They had created a system designed to keep me out of the process.
They had used their phone number.
They had controlled the communication.
They had expected me to discover the debt only after the money had already been used.
But there was more.
David continued scrolling.
Then he said:
“There is an identification document attached to the application.”
My heartbeat slowed.
“Show me.”
He opened the file.
It was a photograph of my driver’s license.
My name.
My date of birth.
My address.
My photograph.
But then I noticed something.
“The address is wrong.”
David nodded.
