Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Lucas promised me.”
My eyes opened.
Samantha had heard it too.
“Did he just say Lucas promised him something?”
“Yes.”
“What did he promise?”
“I don’t know.”
Then my father raised his voice.
“He told me before the accident that the company would be mine if anything happened to him!”
The room went silent.
Even Courtney looked at him differently.
Charles immediately realized he had said too much.
He had forgotten I was listening.
Or perhaps he simply no longer thought my opinion mattered.
Then the front door opened.
Two police officers stepped onto the porch.
One was a woman in her forties. The other was younger.
The woman immediately came toward me and crouched down.
“Ma’am, are you Victoria Gallagher?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Officer Ramirez. An ambulance is right behind us.”
Her eyes moved toward the blood around my knee and then back to my face.
“Did someone hurt you?”
I looked through the doorway.
My father was standing there.
“Yes.”
Officer Ramirez followed my gaze.
“Who?”
