She invited forty people, decorated the entire venue with pictures of herself, opened my presents before I could touch them, and repeatedly reminded everyone how wonderful it was that she was finally becoming a grandmother.
I tried to stay quiet.
My own mother had passed away years earlier, and I desperately wanted my son to grow up knowing the grandmother he still had.
But then Diane stood in front of everyone, raised her glass, and announced,
“Our precious little boy is going to be named Benjamin!”
The room erupted in applause.
My husband, Levi, went completely still.
Because Benjamin was the one name we’d specifically told his mother we would never give our son.
Then Diane pulled out a personalized baby blanket with BENJAMIN embroidered across it.
She smiled and said,
“I’ve already told everyone. It’s settled.”
I thought Levi was going to argue.
Instead, he walked to the dessert table, removed the enormous banner celebrating his mother, and began taking down the photographs she’d displayed.
When Diane demanded to know what he was doing, he answered,
“I’m giving my wife her baby shower back.”
And that was when the entire room fell silent.
But the trouble had started weeks earlier.
