“So you’re threatening to keep my grandson from me?”
“No,” Levi replied. “I’m telling you that your behavior will determine what kind of relationship we can have.”
She shook her head.
“You’re erasing me from this family.”
“Nobody is erasing you, Mom.”
He paused.
“But being Grandma and being Mom are two different roles. You need to let Mel have hers.”
Diane stood motionless for several seconds.
I thought she might finally apologize.
I thought she might acknowledge how much she’d taken over.
But she didn’t.
Instead, she gathered the personalized blanket against her chest and picked up her purse.
Her face was flushed with anger and embarrassment.
“I never imagined my own son would humiliate me like this.”
Then she walked out.
The restaurant remained silent.
I watched the door close behind her.
