“I loved my mother,” I said. “But I wish she’d told me you tried.”
Arthur reached across the table.
“So do I.”
After a moment, I took his hand.
“I wish she’d told me you tried.”

“How did Emma find you?” I asked.
Arthur smiled.
“She was determined.”

Five years earlier, my daughter had been helping me sort through old documents when she’d found my birth certificate.
I’m sure it must have listed my father’s full legal name.
“How did Emma find you?”
She’d asked about him.
I’d told her he was gone and changed the subject.
But it seems Emma searched public records and eventually found Arthur living less than two hours away.
“One afternoon, she knocked on my door,” he said.
“What did she say?”
She’d asked about him.
He laughed.
“She asked, ‘Are you Arthur? Because I think you’re my grandfather, and I have some questions.'”
