4. The Woman Herself: The Most Unsettling Error Of All
Now, finally, look at the woman in the center. She is smiling gently at the camera. She has shoulder-length brown hair, parted in the middle. She is wearing a white blouse with a small floral pattern, a denim jacket with buttons and pockets, and high-waisted, flared denim jeans. Her right hand is in her jeans pocket. Her left hand is resting lightly on her left thigh.
She looks friendly. She looks normal. She looks like someone’s aunt or older sister in 2004.
But look at her hands.
Her right hand, in her pocket, is mostly hidden. We can only see a few fingers curled over the pocket edge. That is fine.
Her left hand is fully visible, hanging down by her side. Count the fingers.
One, two, three, four, five… and then what is that?
Her fingers are too long. They are too smooth. They blend into each other. The thumb is in a strange position, almost merged with her leg. The hand does not quite connect to the wrist in a natural human way. The sleeve of her denim jacket ends, and then the hand just appears, a little too large, a little too perfect, and a little too wrong.
