rhythmic tap.

The contractor, a tall man named Miller, tapped his yellow clipboard against his thigh and looked up.

He had a smear of dark asphalt on his collar.

“It is worse than a simple patch job,” Miller said.

I adjusted my silver wedding band, sliding it back and forth against my knuckle.

“How much worse?” I asked.

Miller pulled a tape measure from his belt, let it snap shut, and shook his head.

“Four thousand dollars to tear out the old flashing and lay the new shingles before the November frost,” he said.

He wrote the number at the bottom of his yellow sheet.

My monthly pension check was exactly two thousand dollars.

“Is the leak coming from the valley?” I asked.

“It is the flashing around the chimney,” Miller said. “The old tar has cracked right through.”

“Can we just patch it for now?” I asked.

“You could,” he said, “but the next heavy snow will bring the plaster down on your stove.”

He handed me the estimate and walked out my back door.

The screen door banged twice in the autumn wind.

The wind on Evelyn’s covered porch three hours later smelled of damp leaves and cold iron.

Evelyn poured tea from her English porcelain pot, her gold charm bracelet clinking against the rim of her cup.

“We are going to the Prime Cut on Thursday,” Evelyn said, her voice rapid and light.

“Just the three of us, like old times, to celebrate my birthday a week early,” she added.

I held my warm teacup with both hands to keep them still.

“The Prime Cut is a bit dear for me this month, Evelyn,” I said.

“Nonsense, Martha, it is only a dinner,” she said with a breathless laugh.

“We must have the ribeye, and those little potatoes they roast in beef fat,” she said.

She twisted a small gold teapot charm on her wrist, her fingers moving in quick, nervous circles.

“The steakhouse has those twenty-dollar side dishes now,” I said.

“Oh, who cares about that on a birthday?” Evelyn said, her eyes wide.

She took a quick sip of her tea, her gold bracelet jingling against the saucer.

“We only turn sixty-five once, Martha,” she said.

I looked at the manicured lawn of her garden.

“I have some home repairs to manage,” I said.

“Repairs are always there,” she said. “Memories are what we keep.”

“It is just a dinner, Martha, do not make it a federal case,” she said, waving her hand.

She laughed again, a sound that ended too quickly.

“I will think about it,” I said.

Clara’s basement laundry room smelled of lavender soap and hot cotton.

We stood on opposite sides of her folding table, smoothing out her husband’s heavy flannel shirts.

Clara cleared her throat, her fingers pausing on a collar.

“Evelyn called me about Thursday,” Clara said in her quiet, schoolteacher voice.

“She wants to go to the steakhouse,” I said.

Clara set the shirt down and smoothed it once more.

“You should be careful with those invitations,” Clara said.

“We always split the bill, Clara,” I said. “It is what we have done since we were girls.”

Clara looked down at the pile of white pillowcases between us.

“Sometimes people do not change their habits when their situations change,” Clara said.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“Just that some people have more history than they do current assets,” Clara said.

She picked up another shirt and did not look at me.

“Evelyn has her husband’s estate,” I said.

Clara cleared her throat again, a dry, sharp sound in the small room.

“Just be careful, Martha,” she said.

“Is there something you are not telling me?” I asked.

Clara folded a sleeve over the breast pocket and did not answer.

My bedroom was cold by nine o’clock.

I sat on the edge of the mattress with my worn leather ledger open on my lap.

The brown water dripped from the center of the kitchen plaster, hitting the gray linoleum with a heavy, rhythmic
