Shattered By a Forgotten Call

I heard my husband say he hated me before he ever had the courage to say it to my face.

The words came through the phone—thin, metallic, and unmistakably cruel. He thought he had hung up.

He hadn’t.

I stood frozen in our kitchen, Sophie resting on my hip, her bottle warming beside the sink. For ninety seconds, I listened to the man I had loved describe a life in which I no longer existed.

Ninety seconds.

That was all it took for my marriage, my motherhood, and everything I thought I knew about my life to split cleanly in two.

There was the life I believed I had.

And then there was the truth.

By the time our anniversary dinner arrived, I had stopped begging reality to be kinder than it was.
