After doctors warned that another pregnancy could be life-threatening, a mother of three accepted that she would never have the daughter of her dreams. Years later, her husband summoned her to a hospital where a newborn girl was waiting, along with a confession she never expected.
My husband called me from a hospital on a Tuesday afternoon.
“I need you to come. There’s a baby here.”
I stopped wiping down the kitchen counter. “James, whose baby?”
“Please. Just come.”
Some sentences change the temperature of a room instantly. That was one of them. I checked the clock—2:27 p.m. Our youngest wouldn’t be home from preschool for an hour, and the older boys were still at school.
“What hospital?”
He told me.
“Why are you there?”
“I’ll explain when you get here.”
“James.”
“Please.”
His voice sounded off. Not guilty, exactly, but not frightened either—something unsettlingly in between. I drove there in the very shirt I’d been using to clean the kitchen.
