My Sister Asked Me to Come Alone to Her Birthday—Then I Learned Why

Three days before my sister Leah’s birthday, she called and asked me not to bring my husband, Marcus. Her careful tone made me wonder whether the request was connected to an old family disagreement. When I asked why, she simply said, “Ask him where he was last Friday.” Marcus had told me he worked late that evening, came home after midnight, showered, and blamed a difficult client for the delay. After nine years of marriage, I had rarely questioned his explanations. However, when I asked again, he struggled to remember the client’s name and became defensive, suggesting that I skip Leah’s birthday if I trusted her more than him. His reaction made me realize there was something he was not telling me.

I went to Leah’s apartment alone, where she explained that she had seen Marcus entering a nearby restaurant with our father. He was carrying a folder, and they appeared to be discussing something serious. Leah had not wanted to make assumptions, so she waited to speak with me privately. She had recently discovered that Marcus and our father had been discussing the small house our grandmother left me. The property had become valuable, and my father believed I should sell it, even though I had always made clear that the decision belonged to me. More troublingly, Marcus and my father had discussed possible financial arrangements involving the property without telling me. Marcus knew how important the house was to me, making the secret meeting especially painful.
