Olivia had gone from a cramped one-bedroom apartment to having a yard, a lake, and her own room
As I walked back toward my car, an older man leaned against the fence between our yards.
“Hello, I’m Harold,” he said. “Your dad and I used to fish together. He talked about you all the time.”
“I’m Samantha. And that’s Olivia.”
“She’s a keeper,” he said with a smile. “I’ve got tools if you need help with that porch.”
Before I could answer, I felt someone watching us.
I looked up the slope.
The large house next door had a woman standing on its balcony, staring at my old blue Chevrolet.
“Morning,” I called politely.
She finally answered.
“Could you park it somewhere else? It’s ruining my view of the lake.”
I blinked. “This is my driveway. I don’t have anywhere else to park.”
“That’s Valerie,” Harold muttered.
Valerie looked at my car with disgust.
