PART 1 — The Phone Call
My thirteen-year-old son took a dishwashing job without telling me. Six months later, his boss called and said words that made my blood run cold.
“Do you know what Evan does with every paycheck?”
“He’s saving for a bike,” I said, gripping the phone tighter.
A long silence. Then: “Ma’am, you’d better sit down. Everything that boy tells you about that money is a lie.”
Before I could ask what he meant, I heard shouting in the background. Then Evan’s voice: “Please! Don’t tell my mom!” Another voice. A crash — glass or plates shattering.
“Evan?” I screamed into the phone. “EVAN?”
His boss came back, breathing hard. “Mrs. Miller, get here now. Your son tried to do it again.”
