The call came before my coffee had finished brewing.
It was exactly 7:00 on a Tuesday morning.
I remember the time because I had just glanced at the microwave clock while reaching for my coffee mug. The house was still quiet. The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen, the coffee machine made its familiar dripping sound, and sunlight was beginning to creep through the blinds.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID showed my bank.
Normally, I wouldn’t have thought much of it. Banks call customers for all kinds of reasons. Fraud alerts, account updates, routine questions.
But something about the timing made me uneasy.
I answered.
“Hello?”
“Sloan?”
It was David Sterling, the manager of my local branch.
His voice was unusually serious.
“I need you to come into the branch this morning with your identification.”
I straightened.
“Why?”
There was a pause.
It wasn’t a long pause.
Maybe two seconds.
But it was long enough to make my stomach tighten.
